The BBC reported that Dame Maggie Smith’s family announced her death at the age of 89. She was one of the world’s most beloved actresses. The sad news quickly spread around the world, marking the end of an age for an artist who won many awards over the course of seven decades.

 

Maggie Smith starred in many famous movies and TV shows, including the popular Downton Abbey and the “Harry Potter” movies, where she played Professor McGonagall.

Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, her sons, said in a heartfelt statement, “With great sadness, we must announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.” Her death was peaceful in the hospital early this morning, September 27. She was very private, so her friends and family were with her when she died. She was loved by her two sons and five grandkids, who are all very sad about the death of their mother and grandmother.

The family also wanted to thank the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for all the care and kindness they showed during her last days.
