In October, there will be in-depth looks at important times in rock history, the return of a legendary punk band, and some exciting live recordings.
For a six-CD/1-LP collector’s edition reissue, Queen’s first record from 1973 has been given a new name and more tracks have been added. The set, which is now called Queen I, has a new track order that includes “Mad the Swine,” which wasn’t on the original release. It also has demos, sessions, live cuts, and a recording from Queen’s very first live show in London that has never been released before. The 1982 album Long After Dark by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is also back with a new mix and extras from live shows on French TV.
The heavy lifting album by Bob Ezrin is the first studio album by the important punk band MC5 in 53 years. The project was started by founding guitarist Wayne Kramer, and it includes Dennis Thompson, who used to play drums for the MC5. Both of them have since died. At the same time, Rick Wakeman is putting out “Yessonata” to a bigger audience. Up until now, you could only buy this 30-minute instrumental with Yes songs on vinyl at the shows. After posting a lot of vague messages on social media, The Smile is back with their third record, Cutouts.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young played at New York’s Fillmore East just a few weeks after Woodstock in an event that hasn’t been released before. Joni Mitchell’s most recent historical release is a collection of her work from 1976 to 1980 with Asylum Records. It includes albums like Mingus, Hejira, and Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. Tour records from Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue are another great thing about it.
Motley Crue’s new EP, Cancelled, has a version of Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right,” which has become a standard in their sets over the past few years. These are the first Motley Crue songs with John 5, who replaced Mick Mars. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains is also putting out a solo record called I Want Blood. Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Mike Bordin of Faith No More, and other musicians will be contributing to it.
